#### Bathing is one of the basic grooming procedures that helps maintain a dog’s hygiene. Unlike cats, dogs do not have a rough tongue that allows them to clean themselves. Baths are necessary, so it’s important to know at what age to start bathing a dog, how often it should be done, and how to do it properly.

#### There are situations where bathing is necessary regardless of the dog’s breed or age, such as:

- #### Heavy dirt – e.g., when the dog rolls in mud, feces, or other unpleasant substances

- #### Unpleasant odor – when the dog emits a strong, undesirable smell

- #### Dermatological issues – if the dog has a skin condition and bathing with specialized products is recommended by a vet

- #### Presence of external parasites – bathing may help combat fleas or other parasites

- #### Living indoors and sleeping with humans – more frequent washing may be needed for hygiene, especially for dogs with hair-like coats

- #### Swimming in natural bodies of water – bathing at home may be needed afterward, especially if the water was contaminated

#### Bathing should be avoided (or done with caution) when:

- #### The dog is exposed to cold

- #### The dog is ill

- #### Excessive washing may strip the natural protective barrier of the coat and skin

#### Puppies should generally not be bathed unless necessary. The first bath should not occur before the puppy is at least 3 months old and has received all vaccinations. This is due to their low immunity, which strengthens with each vaccination. Bathing too early can weaken the animal’s resistance. If bathing is unavoidable, it should be as short and gentle as possible.

#### Bathing adult dogs depends largely on their breed, coat length, activity level, and living environment. A house dog that goes on calm walks will require less frequent bathing than one that loves playing in mud. Dogs with long coats need extra attention, especially when rinsing shampoo. In general, most dog breeds should be bathed no more than every 3 to 6 months.

#### There are general bathing schedules:

- #### Weekly

- #### Monthly

- #### Quarterly

#### Use shampoos specifically designed for dogs. They should match the dog’s coat type and any skin conditions, and have a neutral or dog-friendly pH. Human shampoos are not recommended due to differences in skin pH.

#### **Types of dog shampoos**:

- #### Universal shampoos – suitable for most breeds and coat types

- #### Hypoallergenic shampoos – for dogs with sensitive skin or allergies

- #### Puppy shampoos – gentler for young dogs

- #### Anti-parasitic shampoos – help fight fleas, ticks, and other parasites

- #### Medicinal shampoos – for skin conditions like fungal infections, dandruff, or itching

- #### Shampoos for long/short coats – tailored to specific coat needs

#### If dog shampoo is unavailable, a mild soap like olive soap or gray soap may be used in emergencies—just ensure thorough rinsing.

#### Dogs should be bathed in containers appropriate to their size and comfort, such as a bathtub, large bowl, shower tray, or special dog tub. If you’re unsure about bathing your dog or have one with a difficult coat, consider using a professional groomer.

#### Alternatives to Full Bathing

- #### Dog-friendly wet wipes – great for quick cleaning of fur and paws at home or on walks

- #### Spot cleaning with water – many messes can be removed by washing only the dirty areas
