### What Are Dietary Supplements?

#### Dietary supplements for dogs and cats are products designed to complement the animal’s daily diet with essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals, or other substances that may be insufficient in their food or needed to support specific bodily functions.

#### They are not medications and do not treat diseases, but they can improve the animal’s overall condition, support joints, the immune system, skin and coat, digestion, and the function of specific organs.

#### Supplements are needed when the diet does not provide all essential nutrients or during periods of increased demand, such as growth, pregnancy, lactation, or health issues.

#### When to Use Supplements?

- #### **To correct deficiencies** – when the diet lacks certain nutrients

- #### **To support growth** – for puppies and kittens

- #### **To improve condition** – of skin, coat, and joints

- #### **To boost immunity** – especially during weakness or winter

- #### **To aid digestion** – in cases of gastrointestinal problems

- #### **To support organ function** – for proper heart, kidney, and liver performance

- #### **As part of treatment** – supplements may assist in managing conditions like kidney or urinary tract issues

#### During growth, puppies and kittens need more calcium and phosphorus for proper bone and tooth development. Pregnant and lactating females require more vitamins and minerals to meet their own and their offspring’s needs. Senior pets may need support for joints, immunity, and cognitive function. Dogs involved in intense physical activity—hunting, working, or sports—may benefit from supplementation to meet increased energy demands. If a dog or cat is fed homemade food, supplementation may be necessary to ensure a complete and balanced diet. After illness or surgery, animals may also need extra vitamins and minerals for recovery.

#### Examples of Supplemented Nutrients:

- #### **Glucosamine and chondroitin** – support joint function, especially in older pets and breeds prone to joint issues

- #### **Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids** – improve skin and coat condition, reduce inflammation, support immunity

- #### **B vitamins** – aid metabolism, nervous system, and skin and coat health

- #### **Vitamins C and E** – act as antioxidants, support immunity

- #### **Minerals (zinc, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium)** – essential for proper body function, strong bones, teeth, and coat

#### Remember: supplementation should always be tailored to the individual needs of the animal and consulted with a veterinarian.
