How many times a day should you feed your dog and cat? The answer isn’t simple, as it depends on many factors. Feeding frequency depends on the animal’s age, size, breed, lifestyle, feeding method, and type of food.

Wild animals usually eat when they’re hungry and only as much as needed to satisfy that hunger. Domestic animals have lost this instinct and typically can’t regulate their food intake on their own. Feeding them “freely”—meaning keeping food constantly available in the bowl—can quickly lead to overweight and obesity. Most pets can’t resist the urge to eat and tend to overeat.

There are exceptions when free feeding is justified, such as during pregnancy and lactation, when a female dog needs extra energy.

A general rule is: if the dog doesn’t eat the food within 20 minutes, it should be removed.

So How Should You Portion Food for Dogs and Cats?

Each dog and cat should be treated individually. It’s important to tailor feeding frequency to the animal’s specific needs, considering age, breed, size, and activity level. There’s no universal recipe for feeding frequency. You should follow general and specific recommendations from pet food manufacturers and veterinarians.

Preparing homemade food requires knowledge of ingredients, nutritional properties, and the animal’s developmental stages, which also affect feeding frequency.

General Feeding Guidelines:

**Dogs**

- _Puppies_: 3–5 times daily, depending on age
- _Adult dogs_: 2–3 times daily, sometimes up to 4
- _Seniors_: 2–4 meals daily, in smaller portions
- _Highly active or working dogs_: 3 meals daily to maintain energy levels

**Cats**

- _Kittens_: Like puppies, more frequent feeding — 3–4 times daily
- _Adult cats_: 2–4 times daily, depending on whether food is wet or dry and the cat’s preferences
- _Neutered/spayed cats_: 3–5 meals daily, in smaller portions

Breeders Should Ensure:

- **Consistent meal times**: Feeding at regular times supports digestion
- **Individual needs**: Every pet is different, so observe and adjust feeding accordingly
- **Variety**: Offer both wet and dry food, plus treats in moderation
- **Adaptation to life stages**: Adjust feeding during pregnancy, lactation, or other special periods
- **Veterinary consultation**: When in doubt, consult a vet to choose the right diet and feeding schedule
