High temperatures during the summer season are a challenge not only for us, but above all for our four-legged friends. Both dogs and cats regulate their body temperature completely differently than humans - they don't sweat all over their bodies, and they get rid of excess heat mainly through panting (dogs) or grooming their fur (cats). When the thermometers hit record highs, the comfort of home becomes their sanctuary. How can we truly support our pets on hot days? Discover safe and proven home remedies for keeping them cool.

**1\. Constant access to fresh water (With a little trick)**

Due to high temperatures, water in the bowl quickly becomes lukewarm and unappealing to your pet.

- **For dogs:** Change the water several times a day. You can toss in 2-3 ice cubes, but make sure the water isn't freezing cold - too much of a thermal shock can irritate their throat.
- **For cats:** Cats prefer drinking running water. Hot weather is the perfect time to set up a cat water fountain. It's also a good idea to place extra water bowls in various parts of the house.

**2\. Wet diet: hydration from the inside out**

During heatwaves, pets' appetites naturally decrease. To sneak as much fluid into their system as possible, reduce the amount of dry food in favor of high-quality premium wet food from **Belly Welly**. Canned meat and pouches are rich in natural juices that effectively hydrate the body from within.

**Belly Welly tip:** You can prepare safe "dog/cat ice cream" for your pet. Spread a portion of wet food onto a licking mat (lick mat) and place it in the freezer for 30 minutes. This snack cools them down, while also calming and relaxing your pet.

**3\. Relaxation zone and cool compresses**

Animals instinctively search for the coolest spots in the house - they often lie down on the tiles in the bathroom or hallway. Let them do so and set up a rest zone there.

- **Cooling mat:** This is a great investment. It is pressure-activated by the pet's body weight and provides a pleasant, gradual cooling sensation without the risk of chilling their bladder.
- **Cool towels:** If you don't have a mat, soak a towel in cool (not freezing!) water, wring it out well, and place it on the floor. **Important:** Do not place a wet towel over your dog's or cat's back - this will disrupt their natural thermoregulation. Your pet should lie on it with their belly or paws, where their sweat glands are located.

**4\. Adjusting walk times and creating indoor shade**

During the day, skip long walks and intense playtime with your dog. Head out for longer walks early in the morning or late in the evening when the asphalt is no longer scorching their paws. At home, close the blinds or curtains to prevent rooms from heating up. If you use air conditioning or fans, make sure the airflow is not directed straight at your pet's bed.

**Summary**

Surviving the heat requires our attentiveness. Remember that senior pets, puppies, kittens, and brachycephalic breeds (mugs, bulldogs, Persian cats) are much more vulnerable to heatstroke. Keep a close eye on your friend, make sure they have a bowl full of fresh water and high-meat meals, and enjoy a safe summer together!
